The Best IPTV Players for UK Viewers in 2026

Your IPTV subscription supplies the channels; the player app decides how it feels to use. Here is how the main apps compare, and which one to pick for your device.

By the Digitalby team ·

Why the player matters as much as the service

An IPTV player is the app that turns your login into a usable TV experience. It loads the channel list, draws the TV guide, handles favourites and catch-up, and decodes the video. Two people on the same IPTV UK subscription can have very different evenings simply because one uses a well-built player and the other uses a clunky one.

None of these apps come with channels. They are empty shells until you add a login from a provider, normally as an Xtream Codes login (server URL, username and password) or an M3U playlist link. That also means you can switch players at any time without changing your subscription.

TiviMate: the best IPTV player for a proper TV guide

If you watch mostly live TV and want it to feel like a satellite box, TiviMate is the one to beat. Its guide grid is fast, the channel groups can be reordered and hidden, and the premium version adds recording, catch-up, multiple playlists and picture-in-picture.

TiviMate runs on Android-based devices only, which includes Fire Stick, Fire TV, Android TV boxes, Google TV and the NVIDIA Shield. The free version is usable but limited; the premium upgrade is a modest yearly fee and covers several devices on one account.

Good to know

  • When you add a playlist, choose Xtream Codes rather than M3U so the guide and on-demand library load automatically.
  • Increase the buffer size in the playback settings if you watch a lot of live sport on Wi-Fi.
  • It is not on the Amazon Appstore, so Fire Stick owners install it with Downloader. Our Fire Stick guide covers that.

IPTV Smarters Pro: the easiest all-rounder

IPTV Smarters Pro is the app we recommend to most new customers, because it runs on nearly every platform with the same layout: Fire Stick, Android, iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, Windows and Mac. Setup is one screen. Choose Login with Xtream Codes API, enter your details and it splits everything into Live TV, Movies and Series.

It is less polished than TiviMate for channel surfing, and the guide is a little slower on older sticks, but for families who use several types of device it is hard to beat. One login, the same app everywhere.

IBO Player: the smart TV option

Samsung and LG smart TVs cannot install Android apps, so the choice is narrower. IBO Player is available in both app stores and works well. When you open it, it shows a MAC address and device key; you add your playlist on the app's website, or send the code to your provider, and the channels appear on the TV.

The app is free to try and needs a small one-off activation to keep using it. If you would rather avoid that, plugging a Fire Stick into the TV gives you access to every Android player instead.

GSE Smart IPTV: best on Apple

On iPhone, iPad and Apple TV, GSE Smart IPTV is a dependable choice with solid TV guide support, and it handles both Xtream Codes logins and M3U playlists. IPTV Smarters Pro is also available on Apple devices, so try both and keep the one whose layout you prefer.

XCIPTV: good for films and box sets

XCIPTV is free on Android and has a clean interface for the on-demand side of a subscription, with posters, descriptions and resume-watching. Its live TV guide is fine rather than great, so it suits households that spend more time on films and series than on live channels.

VLC: for a quick test

VLC is not a full IPTV player, but it is useful on a computer to check a playlist works. Open Media, then Open Network Stream, paste your M3U link and press Play. There is no TV guide and browsing thousands of channels in VLC is awkward, so treat it as a test tool.

Which player should you choose?

  • Fire Stick or Android TV and mostly live TV: TiviMate.
  • A mix of devices in the house: IPTV Smarters Pro everywhere.
  • Samsung or LG TV with no stick: IBO Player.
  • Apple TV, iPhone or iPad: GSE Smart IPTV or IPTV Smarters Pro.
  • Mostly films and box sets: XCIPTV or IPTV Smarters Pro.

What to look for in any IPTV player

Whichever app you try, a few features make the biggest difference day to day:

  • Xtream Codes support, so live channels, the guide and on-demand content all load from one login.
  • A fast EPG that shows at least seven days and does not freeze while scrolling.
  • Favourites and channel group editing, so you can hide the categories you never watch.
  • Adjustable buffer and an alternative player engine, which help on weaker Wi-Fi.
  • Active development. Apps that have not been updated in a year tend to break on new devices.

A word on unofficial copies

Popular players are often re-uploaded on random websites with ads or worse added. Only install apps from the official app store or the developer's own website, and be wary of any "player" that comes pre-loaded with channels. The player should always be empty until you add your own login.

Ready to put a player to work?

All of these apps work with a Digitalby login. Follow the IPTV setup guide for your device, or start with the 24-hour IPTV free trial and try two or three players side by side before you choose a plan.
